Alan Ayckbourn: Actor

Alan Ayckbourn's professional theatre career began as an actor in Sir Donald Wolfit's company in 1956. From there he worked as a volunteer student assistant stage manager at Connaught Theatre, Worthing, before becoming an assistant stage manager at the Leatherhead Theatre Club, the Oxford Playhouse and the Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, Scarborough. In all these venues he was also given the opportunity to act. By 1959 - the start of his playwriting career - he was primarily employed as an actor at Scarborough's Theatre inn the Round at the Library Theatre and, from 1962, at the Victoria Theatre, Stoke-on-Trent. By the time he retired from professional acting in 1964, he was reckoned to be the most experienced professional in-the-round actor in the UK.

Below is a list of all his known acting roles. Click on a play title to find out more about the production. Please note, the Library Theatre, Scarborough, is a contraction of Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre.
